Meeting Minutes:

School Council Initiatives (M. Cruickshank)

Traffic Management Study

  • Will participate in the walk to school day on Feb. 7th.

  • Results of school poll: 70% of kids say they walk, Alana would like to get to 80%

  • Solutions discussed. One of them is that the daycare staff might be able to supervise kids in the morning.

  • Alana says some of the suggestions are not possible.

Other ideas were:

  • Helping parents map walking routes to school

  • Walking school bus

  • Some issues were community and some were school

Fun Fair

  • Mary Anne Waterhouse is getting Fun Fair planning going.
  • Katherine to do book sale maybe.
  • Decided to take seedlings out of Fun Fair, Andrea Muehlebach still to run this. (Sell them in early June)

PRO Grant

  • Will use it for a family STEM night - Mad Science, Scientists in Schools etc.

    • We need to choose a date.

    • Alana would like to choose a teacher to help to work on this project. Perhaps Ms. Cox? Mrs. U suggested having iPads set up to see what kids use them for in school.

M: When is Ms. Cox doing her big STEM day with the kids?

A: Maybe May 17th (Alana later confirmed this to be the case)

Possibly best to do our STEM night May 3rd or 10th

Upcoming Events

Pub/Quiz Night - can use parent engagement grant, late March or early April

Movie Night

Tentatively scheduled for March 1st.

Sudoku Challenge

Reach out to Roberta and see if she is willing to run it again

Talent Show

Tentative wed. May 25th. Agreed to talk to Jonathan about each child only being on stage once

Games Day

Discussed holding a Games Day. Perhaps tied in with the potluck. Sack races, three-legged races etc.

School Houses

Suggested this idea to bring students together.

  • Alana feels that a teacher would need to take it on.

    • Maybe Linda would do it with her grade 6 students

Ward 7 Meeting (M. Cruickshank)

Next one will be here at Garden on January 30th.

Enhancing Equity Task Force - Katherine is going to put together some slides.

Treasurer’s Report (M. Cruickshank)

  • Gingerbread house raffle results: down from previous years

  • Movie Night. Second one didn’t do very well

    • Too much pizza was purchased and went to waste

    • No new requests for funds, teachers haven’t spent their money. (Alana to ask the teachers to spend their money)

Principal’s Update (A. Hardy)

Report cards to go home Feb. 13.

  • Feb 15th in evening parent/teacher conferences. Alana wants every parent to come to their meetings.

Feb. 16th is a PA day.

Clubs/Sports

  • Lunch clubs happening. Lego, etc.

  • Hockey. Joined together with Fern. (In the past officer Eric got his schools together to do an informal league.)

    • Now we don’t have a hockey coach as Eric is retired.

    • Brian McClure decided to take it on. Not enough students to make a team. Talked to Fern and put together a Grade 5-6 team, with their students and ours. We have only 9 students on the team.

Q: What other teams will there be?

A: Brian is going to do floor hockey again. Also there will be volleyball for Grade 5s and 6s. Track and field in the spring.

  • Junior downhill skiing day at Snow Valley - Thursday March 8th.

    • Ms. Childs will stay back with the Grade 3s.

    • Booked a coach and will leave at 7:00. Don’t want to get stuck in assessments, so must leave early. Be back by 5:00. ]

    • As always will be paid for if anyone has difficulty in paying.

Renovations

  • new video system on door has been installed

    • Comment that the door is much heavier now

  • Stairs - a work in progress.

  • Fence in kindy yard has been raised. The Ministry visited the daycare and noted it wasn’t 4 feet high as per code

Lion King

  • Will be Feb. 22nd. Ms. Z has organized costumes etc. Dress rehearsal on the day. Ms. Lawson is working on sets.

After-School Activities

  • Chess. Interest in having chess again? Not through the Chess Institute.

  • Comment about Arts Express programming. Received negative feedback about the drawing/art class.

  • Comment about Maker Kids for an after-school program. Are they board certified?

  • Commented that on forums there is always discussion about the equity of these programs. Are they equitable?

    • Some discussion around this.

  • Harry Potter league suggested

  • Sport after school discussed.

    • Alana suggested perhaps basketball from an outside group.

    • Do a quick survey on Arts Express?

    • People agreed that kids should have the opportunity to do a few different activities

Black History Month.

  • Will ask Kat A. to put up a post about it, provide some reading opportunities etc.

    • The daycare staff wanted more about Black History Month.

Alana is continuing to look at ways to bring daycare staff and teaching staff together.
