Cars During Drop-off & Pick-up - a Word & a Warning

Posted:
Sunday January 24

There was an article in the Star last week about how the most perilous part of a child's day may be at school drop-off in the morning. This is a reminder to be mindful and to take your time when driving on Garden Ave., especially during drop-off and pick-up. This is also a warning that the City of Toronto By-Law Officer dropped into the school last week to give a "heads up" that they will start ticketing idling cars on Garden Ave. starting this week. If you're caught idling, it's cost you over $100.

Posted:
Wednesday January 20

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are writing to provide you with important information about an additional Professional Activity Day (P.A. Day) that has been added to the calendars of all schools in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

All TDSB schools will have a newly designated P.A. Day on Friday, April 15, 2016. This additional P.A. Day has been mandated by the Ministry of Education as a result of provincial labour negotiations.

All TDSB schools will be closed to students on Friday, April 15, 2016. On this day, teachers will be taking part in professional development on provincial education priorities identified by the Minister of Education.

Most Before-and-After School Programs will offer full-day care for children currently registered in their program on the P.A. Day. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to speak to their local child care provider for further details.

The remainder of the 2015-2016 school year calendar remains unaffected. As always, details on the school year calendar can be found on the TDSB website at:
www.tdsb.on.ca/AboutUs/Calendar

Thank you.

Garden Variety Show - Buy Tickets & Volunteer!

Posted:
Sunday January 17

Garden Variety Show on January 30th at 8pm

The 2nd Annual Garden Variety Show is coming up in a couple of weeks (January 30). Tickets are now on sale - and we are looking for volunteers for the event! School Council volunteers will be selling tickets in the lobby on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the school foyer. We will be there from 8-9am and 3:15-5pm. You can also purchase tickets online: http://tinyurl.com/gardenvarietytickets. Please consider buying your tickets BEFORE the event so you can not only have time to find a babysitter, but it's also helpful for the organizers to estimate attendance. Judging from last year's attendance - and the phenomenal feedback we received - it might be a sellout! We are also looking for volunteers for the night of the show. If you are interested in helping out with setup, serving, teardown, or in any other capacity, please contact Heather or Natasha at gardenavenews@gmail.com

Silver Birch Reading Program - Forms due Monday 11 January

Posted:
Thursday January 7

Dear Families,

Students at Garden Avenue Public School are once again invited to participate in the Silver Birch reading program at lunch. This program is run by the Ontario Library Association, and students across the entire province of Ontario participate in it. There are three different types of Silver Birch books to read, and students will choose from one of the following options: Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Non-Fiction, or Silver Birch Fiction.

It will take place on Thursdays at lunch. Junior students who are participating will attend during the first part of the lunch hour (11:45-12:10), and Primary students who are participating will attend during the remaining part of the lunch hour (12:10-12:30). All students will be going outside for part of the lunch hour, so they will still need to bring weather-appropriate outdoor clothing. We will begin on Thursday January 14th and continue until the middle of April. Students who read at least five books out of their chosen option (Express, Non-Fiction, or Fiction) will be invited to attend the Festival of Trees celebration at Harbourfront on May 18th, 2016.

Permission forms can be picked up in Ms. Cox’s Room and must be returned by January 11th.

Grade 4-6 Rehearsals for Garden Ave’s Junior Choir

Posted:
Monday January 4

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! We are excited to begin Garden Ave’s Junior Choir for the Winter/Spring of 2016. Participating in a choir is a rewarding experience that teaches our students about commitment of time and energy and teaches the skill of reading music, singing and performing on a team.

Our choir will meet every Wednesday afterschool from 3:30PM-5:10PM, beginning on Wednesday, January 20th. We will begin each practice with snack time, so please ensure that your child, if they require a snack, has one. Or if they are part of daycare they can get that snack.

We will perform in May for Music Monday and I am waiting to hear back for other exciting performance opportunities!

Please fill out the following permission form which provides me with contact details and allows your child to attend rehearsals.

Sincerely,

Ms. Zampiero

Garden News

Sunday November 15

Thank you so much to Ms Lawson for her leadership in heading up our moving Remembrance Day Assembly. Thank you to Ms. Zampiero for the primary choirs spectacular singing of "Home" and for Ms Chawla’s poignant grade 5/6 letters written in thanks to our Canadian soldiers.

Concerns have been raised around safety during student entry in the morning/recess and at lunch.  As a team we have designed a new Entry Procedure which will  begin this week. Thank you to our Character Education/entry team for your leadership. Please see as follows:

Recess Line-Ups and Transitions

  • all classes are accompanied to the recess exit by their teacher
  • students are dismissed outdoors only after a staff member on duty has arrived outdoors

Entry Line-Ups

  • students going to the second floor will make one line following along the bricks
  • students going to the main floor will make one line following along the fence
  • students will enter the school once their line is in single file and calm
  • only the teachers on duty may decide when the doors open to allow students to re-enter
  • students must walk upon entering the school
  • students going to the second floor will hold the handrails, using both sides of the staircase
  • students will be admitted to their classrooms once they have formed a quiet, single file line outside of the classroom

Let me know if you have any questions.

Ms. Hardy
